Unforgettable Girl (Director) created and devised with Elisabeth Gunawan for my company Created a Monster.
Created a Monster collaborated on the R&D and first showing of Unforgettable Girl in October 2020. The piece was performed by Elisabeth Gunawan, directed by Briony O'Callaghan and Simon Gleave, designed by Charlie Wood and with Sound design by Richard Durning.
Money can’t buy love, but with GBP 19.99/month, you can have Vaccine—the “fair”-est mail order bride in all of Thailand. This is the journey of one lost child, how a lonely little urchin on the streets of Bangkok ventured to become an unforgettable girl. Unforgettable Girl questions what lies beneath what you see, and examines how the world turns some women into “homo-sacer” – “accursed” humans who are irredeemable by justice, freedom and love.
Unforgettable Girl was first presented as part of the Bloomsbury Festival’s 2020 NEW WAVE programme, where it was enthusiastically received.
“A work of depth and beauty... Through the character of an East Asian mail order bride the work interrogates and challenges the privileging norms in society that we are asked to accept often without question. The themes are explored with complexity, nuance, sophistication and humour. Elisabeth Gunawan moves deftly between comedy and pathos, she delivers a tour de force with her performance and she is definitely one to watch.”
